CARD History

In 1988, the Institute of Glaciology and Geocryology, Chinese Academy of Sciences applied and established the World Data Center (WDC) frozen snow and ice centers of China, responsible for the collection, management and sharing the scientific data in the fields of researching ice, snow and frozen soil.It is one of the nine World Data Centers in China.

In 1999, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute,Chinese Academy of Sciences established Digital Heihe Information System (http://heihe.westgis.ac.cn). The data resources of this information system had become the most abundant and the degree of the data sharing had become the highest in the domestic watershed scale.

In 2003, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute,Chinese Academy of Sciences participated in the "Chinese academy of sciences resources environmental scientific data center" and set up "Glacial Permafrost Desert Center", responsible for the collection, collation and sharing of the glacial permafrost and desert data.

In 2004, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute,Chinese Academy of Sciences participated in the "Earth System Science Data Sharing Platform"(http://www.geodata.cn) which was supported by the China Ministry of Science ,then they set up "data running and service center of cold and arid regions"(http://westdc.geodata.cn).This center was the center of discipline and region of the system and responsible for the collection, collation and sharing of the scientific data of glaciers, frozen earth, deserts and western China.

During 2006-2009,Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute,Chinese Academy of Sciences established "China's Western Environment and Ecology Science Data Center(http://westdc.westgis.ac.cn)" with the funding of"Environmental and ecological research in Western China Plan",responsible for the collection and collation the ecological and environmental basic scientific data in western China.Besides, this center participated in project services for this research plans,at the same time,it summarized the scientific data which were produced from the research plan.

During 2007- 2010, Chinese Academy of Western Action Plan (Phase II) project "Heihe River Basin of remote sensing-ground-based observations synchronized and integrated simulation platform test" and "Epicontinental and passive remote sensing of environmental co-factor theory and methods of inversion"which was the national key basic research program (973Program) organized and implemented the test whose name was "integrated remote sensing combined Heihe test"(http://westdc.westgis.ac.cn) in the Heihe river basin. The test output data were managed and released through the Western China's Environmental and Ecological Science Data Center(http://westdc.westgis.ac.cn/heihe).

In 2010,the National Natural Science Foundation Committee launched the major research plan "Heihe River Ecology - Hydrological Process Integration Study ". The research plan set up the project "The Data Integration Services For Heihe River Ecology - Hydrological Process Integration Study" to provide the data services for this plan. The data results which were produced from the plan were managed and shared through the Western China's Environmental and Ecological Science Data Center(http://westdc.westgis.ac.cn/heihe).

In 2011, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute,Chinese Academy of Sciences decided to integrate the various existing data systems and data center and set up "China Cold and Arid Regions Science Data Center".This center collected and collated the scientific data resources in cold and arid regions, then it provided a unified data service to the public.

In 2011, World Data System for Cold and Arid Regions (CARD) applied to join the World Data System and integrated variety of data resources of the original World Data Center Glaciology and Geocryology at Lanzhou. In addition, it created a new data management and sharing system(http://card.westgis.ac.cn).
