The Pan-Third Pole covers the Tibetan Plateau, Pamir, the Hindu Kush, the Iranian Plateau, and the Caucasus and Carpathian Mountains, a region greater than 20 million square kilometres in area and with a population of more than 3 billion people in downstream areas that are influenced by these mountainous regions.

The Big Data System for the Pan-Third Pole is built and maintained by the National Tibetan Plateau Data Center hosted by the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences. This system stores, integrates, analyses, excavates and publishes scientific data of the Pan-Third Pole, currently (as of October 2019) including more than 1700 datasets covering geography, atmospheric science, cryospheric science, hydrology, ecology, geology, geophysics, natural resource science, social economy, and other fields. The system is also gradually developing the functions of online big data analysis and model application. The system aims to become a world-leading data platform for the Pan-Third Pole environment.

The system integrates various kinds of data resources, such as the Third Pole Environment Database (, the Cold and Arid Regions Science Data Center at Lanzhou (, and the Data Platform for the Three Poles Environment ( The system will continuously integrate scientific data produced by the CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) Strategic Priority A Program of the “Pan-Third Pole Environment Study for a Green Silk Road” and the “Second Tibetan Plateau Scientific Expedition and Research (STEP)” programme.
